Humane Treatment of Migrant Children and Families
Between October 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018, at least 2,700 children have been split from their parents. 1,995 of them were separated over the last six weeks of that window — April 18 to May 31 — indicating that at present, an average of 45 children are being taken from their parents each day. The Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment does not permit the government to forcibly take a child from her mother, without justification or even a hearing.
The Opioid Fix That Wasn't
President Trump signed an omnibus opioid crisis bill that the bill’s author called “the most significant congressional effort against a single drug crisis in history.” But given that the bill bolsters many prior and dangerous interventions, we should only expect the crisis to get worse because of it. But this government intervention had one major flaw — the crisis was not caused by prescribing. After a 28 percent decrease in opioid prescribing since 2012, opioid overdose death rates have now doubled. The government’s own data show non-marijuana illicit drug use has actually remained stable since 2002. The only difference now is that users are exposed to less pharmaceutical-grade options. When drugs aren’t supplied by the legal market and clean, they’ll inevitably be supplied by the illegal market and dirtier. You may be able to find the same oxycodone pills from less expensive sources, but if they are counterfeit and adulterated with fentanyl, you risk the same tragic death as Prince.
Deschedule Marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act Now
Marijuana has been officially recognized as a legitimate medicine in 16 U.S. States in addition to the District of Columbia. The current FDA guidelines for scheduling controlled substances categorize all uses of marijuana (including that used for medical use, only) as Schedule I, erroneously placing it in the same category as Heroin and Crack Cocaine, stating that it has a high potential for abuse and no recognized medical value. The second portion of the requirement to be a Schedule I substance is absolutely untrue of medical marijuana – a point made quite clear simply by the term itself: medical marijuana. We are demanding Congress and President Barack Obama to alter our current federal policy on medical marijuana and reschedule it appropriately to a Schedule V substance, where it can be researched and prescribed in the same fashion that other therapeutic medicines are today, including as Vicodin or Oxycontin. Please apply our current laws fairly, as they were intended, and adjust mistakes made in the in
Pathways to Police Reform Community Mobilization
Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, Rekia Boyd, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, Sam DuBose, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, . . . . The litany of Black people who have lost their lives at the hands of the police or in police custody seems endless. People are killed and brutalized, but the legal system gives us no relief. Police officer after police officer is either not charged or acquitted. Police who kill are given paid vacation instead of being held accountable. "We must not pretend that the countless people who are routinely targeted by police are “isolated.” They are the canaries in the coal mine whose deaths, civil and literal, warn us that no one can breathe in this atmosphere. … They are the ones who recognize that unlawful police stops corrode all our civil liberties and threaten all our lives. Until their voices matter too, our justice system will continue to be anything but. —Justice Sonia Sotamayor
